Libertarian Party of Fresno County Opposes Measure E

FRESNO, California – The Libertarian Party of Fresno County opposed Measure E when it was submitted to voters in 2022 (and failed) and it will oppose it again this election cycle. Despite the voters turning this down before, the County Supervisors joined with cronies to put this up for a vote again. Less than 2 years later, but with a lower threshold to pass this time around!

This is an unprecedented tax, whereby LOCAL residents are funding a CA public university. No other Cal State or UC schools have received sales tax revenue from their local area. Fresno State is not the responsibility of Fresno County citizens.

This is a TWENTY-FIVE YEAR sales tax! Oversight committees for these taxes are virtually meaningless; If the committee finds that money is mis-spent does that mean that taxpayers get a refund? Or that the tax will be repealed? Of course not – taxpayers will be on the hook for 25 years, regardless of how the money is spent (or mis-spent).

Sales taxes are regressive, with the poor paying a disproportionate share. Every taxable sale in the county will cost local citizens more at the register. If Fresno County residents wish to support Fresno State, they can choose to spend money at athletic events or simply donate (and many of us do!). Why should residents who are already being hit with inflation, higher prices for food, gas, and housing, and job insecurity have to foot the bill?

The Libertarian Party of Fresno County believes voluntary support and free market solutions are best for the future of Fresno County residents. We join with other prominent groups and individuals in Fresno County to urge voters to vote this down (AGAIN)!
